The Cornish Colony Museum is proud to announce that the drawing donated to them by artist K.Y. Craft established a benchmark for the artist in sketches of that size in its recent auction. The auction which ended at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday March 15 of the Craft graphite pencil drawing titled /Gabriel/ sold for a top bid of $5,000. Its estimate prior to the auction was $2,000 to $3,000. In times of economic downturn when even major works are not reaching their estimates in the big New York auction galleries, it was wonderful to see something surpass its pre-auction price.
K.Y. Craft whose oils sell in the mid to high six figure brackets was pleased that a graphite drawing would exceed its estimate. The artist was inducted last year into the Illustrator's Hall of Fame in New York City. She is only one of fourteen women in that august society. Ms. Craft's works are also found in the collection of multiple museums including the National Geographic Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Museum in Washington, the American Illustration Museum in New York City and Vermont's own Cornish Colony Museum.
Alma Gilbert-Smith, founder and director of the museum was pleased and delighted when Ms. Craft brought in the work that she had recently finished to the museum and offered it for the specific purpose of raising funds for the museum. It was hoped that this would help fund the upcoming exhibit featuring the women of the Cornish Colony.
